Courts in Idaho
Courts are governmental institutions that have the authority to judge and determine legal disputes through application of the law. A three-tiered system, the Idaho state court is composed of three levels of increasing judicial authority: the District Courts, the Courts of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. The vast majority of cases are conducted at the District Court level, which includes a Magistrate Division that generally hears criminal misdemeanors, divorce proceedings, infractions and civil cases involving lawsuits of less than $10,000. District judges preside over felony criminal cases and civil actions involving lawsuits of more than $10,000. Appeals may be made to the Court of Appeals; however, only some cases are eligible for review by the state Supreme Court.
