Courts are governmental institutions that have the authority to judge and determine legal disputes through application of the law. A three-tiered system, the California state court is composed of three levels of increasing judicial authority: the Trial Courts, the Courts of Appeal, and the Supreme Court. The vast majority of cases are conducted at the Trial Court level and include civil, criminal, family, probate and juvenile cases. Appeals may be made to the Court of Appeals; however, only some cases are eligible for review by the state Supreme Court.
